How to Add a Printer to a Local Network

Using Windows 10

  • Click the Start button

  • In the Start menu, click on Setting. Then choose Device, and click on Printers and Scanner on the side menu.

  • Click on Add a Printer at the top

  • Windows will scan the network for a printer

  • If you do not see your device click The printer that I want isn’t listed

  • In the next window select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and click Next

  • In the next page, for Device type select TCP/IP Device from the drop down menu

  • Type the Hostname of the device into the Hostname or IP address text field

    • NOTE: It is important not to use the IP address of the device as that IP address may be subject to change

    • The hostname will appear in the format "x.printers.oakland.edu" where x is the specific name of the printer you are trying to reach.
    • The rest of the information "printers.oakland.edu" is always the same but important to include to ensure you are able to reach the printer."

  • Select the checkbox Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use

  • Click Next

  • The printer should return with the driver to be used for your device

  • Click Next and the printer will begin installing

  • Select the Do not share this printer radio button and click Next

  • The printer has been successfully added. Click Finish

  • If this printer does not return with your device driver then you may add them through Windows Updates
  • Click Windows Update button to update a list of drivers
  • Choose the printer Manufacturer and Printer

  • If it is not listed and you already have the drivers for the printer click Have Disk... and navigate to the driver package that you have

  • Failing that you may wish to visit the maufactruer's website to download the drivers

  • Type in the printer name, click Next

  • Select Do not share this printer and click Next

  • Click Finish
