Updating Windows 2003 Server DNS Records in a Non Active Directory Domain

The procedures contained in this page should be referenced when configuring Windows 2003 Domain Controllers at Oakland University which uses Windows Active Directory Domains with non-integrated DNS.

• When installing adding a new Domain Controller you will first request a static IP address from the network team. The Host A record for this IP address needs to be mapped in the format of name.domain.oakland.edu not the standard name.sys.oakland.edu used by normal servers.
• The Network Team will need to add the ip to the "Allow-Updates" configuration on the specific zone and the parent zone
• You will proceed to run the dcpromo command on the server to promote it to a Domain Controller

If at any time after the server is promoted to a Domain Controller the records need to be re-registered you will need to complete the following steps.

• Stop and Start the netlogon service
• At the command prompt type ipconfig /flushdns
• At the command prompt type tipconfig /registerdns

Oakland University is currently using Dynamic DNS (DDNS) and you should no longer manually need provide DNS records to the Network Team. However, DNS record information can be retrieved from the following file netlogon.dns located in C:\Windows\System32\Config
