How do I update my website on www.oakland.edu?
This document describes how you can update your website that resides on www.oakland.edu. These instructions have changed and no longer use the Windows “Map Network Drive,” WinSCP, or any other SFTP utility. The ONLY way to update your website is by using a WebDAV client and following the instructions in this document.
This document describes how to connect and update files on your web space using Windows XP, Linux (GNOME) and Mac OS X. Please note that updating a website that resides on www.oakland.edu is different from other resources on campus.
After following the steps in the following sections, you will be able to directly edit your site. Be aware that this is live data. If you wish to make large changes, you should copy it somewhere, edit it, and then replace the site after you have tested it.
If you have any problems following these steps, please contact the helpdesk at [email protected] or x4357 and we will be glad to help you.
Connecting in Windows XP
- Open My Network Places
- Click Add Network Place
- Click Next
- Select Choose another network location and click Next
Enter the URL to your site, but use https://www-dev.sys.oakland.edu for a hostname instead of http://www.oakland.edu (Note: You must use https). So for example, if you are attempting to update the “widget” website, you would enter the url: https://www-dev.sys.oakland.edu/widget
- Click next and you will be prompted for your NetID username and password. You will probably want to click Remember my password and click OK
- Choose a description for your site; you may also accept the default.
- Click Next, and then Finish
You may now use tools such as Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage to edit your site directly on the server.
Connecting in Linux (GNOME)
- From the main menu bar, click Places
- Click Connect to Server
- For Service Type select Secure WebDAV (HTTPS)
In the Server box enter the URL to your site, but use https://www-dev.sys.oakland.edu for a hostname instead of http://www.oakland.edu (Note: You must use https).
- In the User Name box, enter your NetID username
- Leave Port and Name of this connection blank
- A shortcut to the site will appear on your desktop. When you try to open it, it will ask for your NetID password, again, you may want to save this.
