Migration Assistant

Migration Assistant is a utility for Mac OS X, that can be used to quickly transfer entire profiles (including data), applications, settings and other files.

  1. Open Migration Assistant from /Applications/Utilities
  2. Click Continue on the first screen and enter an administrative username and password when prompted

  3. Select the correct option for how you would like to transfer data. Your options include:
    1. Transfer the data from another Mac
    2. Transfer the data from a time machine backup that was created in the past
    3. Transfer the data to another Mac (This would obviously be used in conjunction with another Mac that has selected the first option)

  4. If you are transferring data from a Time Machine drive, then ensure that it is plugged in and select it when prompted. Simply follow the remaining prompts until you are asked what data to transfer over.
  5. If data is being migrated over from another Mac, choices of FireWire and the network will be shown. Both will work, but FireWire is recommended. Select the desired option and ensure that the other mac is plugged in. If the other Mac, is off then start it and hold down the "t" key to boot into target disc mode. pic3.png

  6. Regardless of how the data is being migrated, you are now presented with a list of items that can be transferred over. Once the sizes have been calculated, select any/all of the items and click continue.
