What is Microsoft Office 365 Education?
Microsoft Office 365 Education for students, faculty and staff is a service that enables access to a suite of MS Office 365 web based software, and cloud storage through OneDrive. Eligible users with (A5 license) will be able to download and install the full Office Productivity Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. You can install / activate Microsoft Office on up to 5 PCs, macOS, tablets, and mobile devices.
What are the different license types available to me?
There are two different levels of licenses for Microsoft Office 365 at Oakland University available to eligible students, staff, and faculty. Please review the information below to see more information on the different levels of licenses and to determine your eligibility status.
The Microsoft 365 Education A1 license grants access to Microsoft 365 Apps for Education (formerly Office 365) through web access (internet browser). It includes access to Word, Excel, Teams and OneDrive (100GB) in the cloud.
The Microsoft 365 Education A5 license includes the ability to download and install the Office Suite on up to 5 personal computers and use up to 100GB of OneDrive storage, plus a comprehensive set of collaborations and security features.
Who is eligible for a license?
The A5 license is granted to the following groups, which enables them to download the M365 Apps for Enterprise software onto their local device.
- Active Faculty
- Active Staff
- Active Students
A license with access to the web-based versions of Microsoft 365 applications, which is an A1 license, is granted to:
- Faculty Emeritus/Emerita
- Non-active adjunct faculty
- Sponsored users
How are licenses assigned?
Due to the terms of our license agreement, OU assigns Microsoft 365 Education A5 licenses to active students, faculty, and staff defined as "Education Qualified Users," while all other eligible accounts are given the Microsoft 365 Education A1 license.
Licenses are currently provisioned using student and employee roles and reviewed. Faculty emeritus/a are assigned a Microsoft 365 Education A1 license. Certain adjunct faculty, staff, and other positions may be assigned this license as well.
What if I am unable to perform certain tasks due to my Microsoft 365 license?
There are a few solutions available:
- Consider whether the web-based Microsoft 365 Apps for Education will work for you; most features available in the desktop-installed versions are also available online.
Depending on your situation, you may be eligible for device licensing Microsoft 365 Apps for Education, allowing you to run Microsoft's M365 productivity suite on your workstation; submit a service request to the [email protected] for more information.

How do I install the desktop version of Microsoft Office?
If you have access to the A5 license (depending on eligibility status), you can install the latest version of Microsoft Office by navigating to the Microsoft Office portal and signing-in with your Oakland University email. Click on the “Home” button from the left-sidebar on the website, from the “Install and More” dropdown, click “Install Microsoft 365 apps”.
What are all the applications currently available to me?
You can view all the Microsoft Office applications that are available to you within the Oakland University Office 365 portal.
Will all my Microsoft Office documents be stored in the cloud?
You can choose to store documents on your local computer, or you can use Microsoft OneDrive.
What will happen to my account and data after I graduate or leave OU?
After one year of graduating, you will lose access and any information stored in OneDrive. If you would like to transfer your data to a personal account prior to graduation, please refer to Microsoft’s documentation on the “Mover Transfer Wizard”. Additional information on personal
